On March 27th VOICCD had the honor of hosting the Hon Emma McBride MP Federal Member for Dobell for a Question and Answer. We had a great turnout. Emma shared with us some of her background in Pharmacy and Mental Health, sharing her experiences in the Health Industry. She also expressed her journey with her father whom suffered from Dementia, therefore expressing her passion for the need for carer support services and appropriate and adequate home care support for both People with a Disability and the Aged. We had a good discussion on the NDIS and the need to lift the staff caps to fix problems within the scheme and waiting periods. Emma shared with us her office had assisted over 300 people with a Disability in the region with NDIS Problems, some involving escalation to the Minister in order for people to gain basic equipment and supports. We all recognised the need for the scheme to improve many problems including LAC Planning processes, Access problems especially for those with health problems and waiting periods.
Liesl Tesch Member for Gosford also joined us in the last 15 minutes of the session, much to our surprise!! Liesl mentioned the need for VOICCD and the local Community to support the campaign for continued funding for Advocacy which is State funded and is set to expire in 2020. Liesl urged the community to write to their local member and sign the Stand By Me petition to ensure these services do not cease for those needing help and assistance both with the NDIS and with other Disability related matters.
We were grateful both Emma and Liesl took the time to listen to the local community about their concerns. We look forward to continued discussion and collaboration with both Emma and Liesl in the future.
